Editing Queries, Proposals, Partial & Full-Length Fiction and Nonfiction Books
I have years of experience editing projects varying in genre from writers varying in background. Whether it's historical fiction, fantasy, contemporary fiction, sci-fi, romance, thriller, cozy mystery, erotica, or nonfiction, I'll apply my experience and insight into your project to help it either get published or simply make it better. For questions regarding projects, either fill out the form on the contact page or email me directly at trperriliteraryediting@gmail and I'll get back to you quickly. I'm also on Twitter and Facebook.
Query Editing: Writing a query letter intended for either an agent or a publisher can be one of the most frustrating things a writer will do. How can you pare your 80,000 word novel down to 350 words? And within those 350 words, how can you adequately pitch your project, summarize it, describe why it's saleable, and introduce yourself?
Proposal Editing: Even though proposal formats differ from agent to agent and publisher to publisher, I'll cut any fat from your proposal and help present your project in the best light to increase the chances of the agent or publisher requesting the full manuscript.
Developmental Editing: This is the deepest level of editing, where the story has trouble telling itself for reasons ranging from ambiguous scope, inconsistent characters, poor use of grammar, choppy or nonexistent dialogue, endless exposition, etc. This level of editing is essentially the verb form of 'writing coach.' Writers who request this service will often bring books they wrote years ago and shelved, frustrated at not being able to make them work.
Copy Editing: Copy editing checks simple things like grammar and facts, and tightens up any blaring plot or character issues. This level of service evolves a manuscript that already flows pretty well, suggesting only minor modifications. Most edits fall under this category.
Proofreading: Proofreading involves moving a comma or period here instead of there, and is generally a 'hands-off-eyes-on' type of editing. Many writers believe they only need proofreading because they (and their friends and family...) have looked it over so many times. However, over the years I've found that an extremely low percentage of submitted manuscripts only need proofreading. I'm more than willing to provide this level of service to anyone's project, however, I will (as always) be up front about the level of service I recommend. If the author would like one or two pages edited pro bono to understand my recommendation, I'll be more than happy to do that.
